Teaching Philosophy
I strive to create a classroom where children feel successful in their work no matter how big or small the accomplishments; a place where they are motivated to show their personal best. Each child has their own individual goals to achieve throughout the year. Mutual respect between teacher/student as well as student/student is a must in developing a successful learning environment. This allows for students to work and learn together positively without fear of being laughed at or criticized. Empathy is an essential part of character and this is taught and acknowledged throughout classroom lessons. This leads in to another component of a successful learning environment which is to create a place where each and every child feels safe and comfortable in participating as well as taking risks, trying new things and giving answers. At the beginning of the year, we develop our classroom rules together. It is crucial that rules and expectations are clearly defined and consistent for children.
I use a wide variety of learning strategies and methods to reach the many varied learning styles present in my classroom. One learning strategy that I use in my classroom is differentiated instruction. This learning strategy acknowledges that there are different levels, abilities and interests in one classroom-no child is exactly the same therefore instruction shouldn't be either. I believe that we must not teach to a classroom as a whole, but, instead, teach and work with each individual student to meet each child's learning needs. By offering a variety of learning situations, activities and environments, a successful partnership between teaching and learning is created.
